The University of South Florida (USF) Institute of Applied Engineering (IAE) provides agile, best-value engineering solutions to enhance the performance, effectiveness of its sponsors, including the Department of Defense; other federal, state, and local agencies; and industry. These engineering solutions include hardware-and-software-based research, advanced technology development, prototypes, and technical services.
The Data Research Support Interns will work under the direction of government technical leadership to support specialized programs. This internship offers an opportunity to work on meaningful data science and program management initiatives supporting broader Department of Defense (DoD) efforts. The intern will contribute to research, analysis, and the development of tools that enhance operational decision-making and resource allocation.
Two internship positions are available: Software Engineer & Data Scientist.
The duties listed may change and/or may not be representative of all tasks associated with the position selected.
Data Science & Analysis
Complete a comprehensive study or data science project.
Analyze complex datasets and develop actionable insights to inform process enhancements.
Program Management Support
Learn and assist in core Program Management (PM) functions.
Contribute to planning, tracking, and reporting activities to support effective program execution.
Business Analytics Development
Develop and refine business analytic tools and methodologies that support resourcing decisions.
Use statistical and data modeling techniques to support analytical assessments.
Process Improvement
Assist in defining and implementing scalable program and product management processes to enhance the operational efficiency of different programs.
Document workflows and propose improvements to support agile and effective delivery.
Project Flexibility & Collaboration
Participate in additional project work as identified by the project lead, adapting quickly to evolving priorities and business needs.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams and contribute to briefings and written deliverables.
Desired Skills And Position Qualifications
Candidates for this internship should be full time students in a related field of study. Candidates should have hands-on classroom/team project technical experience. General Skills
Ability to quickly learn and apply new technologies and tools.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Attention to detail and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and eager to learn.
Good communication skills for effective collaboration with team members and stakeholders.
Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Security Clearance not required, but preferred.
Pursuing a bachelor's degree at a local accredited University with a Junior or Senior standing.
Current GPA of 3.0 or above
Because this position is partially funded by the Department of Defense, candidates must have U.S. Citizenship.
Software Engineer Specifics
Degree in the following: Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Web Development, Game Development, Cybersecurity, etc.
Problem solving skills. Understanding of trail and error.
Familiarity with data analysis tools such as Python, R, SQL, Tableau, or Excel.
